"Never say anything in an electronic message that you wouldn't want appearing, and attributed to you, in tomorrow morning's front-page headline in the New York Times."- Colonel David Russell, former head of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Information Processing Techniques Office
Welcome back! Today we are going to talk about something extremely important and relevant to all of our lives: search engines. We use search engines every single day without even a second thought of what they could be doing behind the scenes. Little do we know, every search we make is tracked and logged by either Google, Mozilla, Yahoo!, Microsoft, etc. Ever wonder how you search, "Nike shoes," on Google and the next ad you see on Facebook is an ad for, "Nike shoes"? This is not a coincidence. Google has tracked your searches and its algorithms have determined that you are interested in "Nike shoes" so they display ads from marketers to attempt to get you to bite.
DuckDuckGo is a completely free search engine that does no tracking whatsoever. It does not even record your history for your own personal use. This is a great way to prevent being tracked online by search engines.
HTTPS Everywhere prevents you from visiting any regular "http:" sites. "https:" means that the website is secured and protected. This add-on to Chrome is an absolute must for everyone. Even if you are not that worried about privacy, this add-on will prevent you from entering into malicious websites that can hack your computer and steal your information.
Privacy Badger is another Chrome add-on that blocks ads and trackers as you search the web. It was made by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting your personal privacy online.
uBlock Origin is similar to Privacy Badger in that it blocks ads and trackers from tracking you as you search the web. The only difference is that if you are concerned about CPU usage, go with this option. uBlock Origin uses less of your computer's CPU than Privacy Badger does, however, they work equally as well.
Ghostery is another ad blocking product, however, this might be the most comprehensive ad blocker. Ghostery is extremely detailed in exactly what ads and trackers it is blocking and what they are tracking.
(I personally use ALL of these on Google Chrome and I would recommend you do the same)
